>> what do we mean by Holistic? Holistic principles recognise the close relationship and interaction between ourselves as a whole and the world we live in. It may seem obvious that a person exits on many levels through body, mind and spirit and that these parts are closely linked to each other and our surrounding environment. Yet, in traditional medicine symptoms of the body or mind are treated as completely separate entities (and the spirit is simply ignored). Illness is fought by suppressing, fighting or destroying the symptoms on a particular, singular level. A Holistic approach to health recognises that illness for any individual is a state of 'dis-ease', or imbalance. The balance is re-addressed by not only focussing on the physical symptoms of the body, but in placing equal importance on the mind and spirit. Continuing good health and preventing future problems are as important as treating the illness, and underlying causes are sought rather than targeting specific ailments. With these problems removed an individual returns naturally to a state of balance, or ease, in which body, mind and spirit are in equilibrium. On a larger scale, holistic principles embody a way of life which not only looks after our own well-being, but also that of the planet we live on.
>> why a Holistic Network? Edinburgh has an increasing number of alternative health practitioners, complementary therapists, classes and workshops. The Edinburgh Holistic Network has been set up to help you locate the services and facilities you need to approach a more holistic way of life. Whether you are looking for a particular complementary therapy, a cafe that serves organic food, or help in arranging your "alternative" wedding, you'll find the information you need in this web site. Here you'll find listings of mind-body-spirit shops selling crystals, books or new age music, information about classes and workshops being held around town, and much more.
>> who's it for? You may already have a clear idea of what you're looking for, in which case you can simply go straight to the relevant section using the menu buttons on the left. Or are you interested in trying an alternative remedy for a health problem, but don't really know what's on offer or how to decide what would best suit your needs? In that case, check out our Which Therapy? section - we hope you'll find it helpful in making your choice. Perhaps you'd just like to know more about a certain therapy or holistic issue. In that case, the glossary section may be able to help you.
>> join us ... We'd like to make this site more than just an on-line "Yellow Pages" of alternative therapies in Edinburgh. We aim to promote a more natural, healthy way of living, and to support the spread of positive, helpful information in the community. We welcome your contribution to the Edinburgh Holistic Network, in any form. You can make it work. Of course if you would like to be listed contact us, or register now, online.
